SWEDEN

Overview

Sweden offers more than just the adjectival modifier of those red, chewy, candy fish we know and love. The largest country in the European Union serves travelers not only the traditional smorgasbord of reindeer meat (sorry, Rudolph), but also the largest shopping mall in all of Europe, Nordstan, and northern-lights nightscapes almost as beautiful as the tall, blonde, and blue-eyed populace. This far north, snow is undoubtedly the main attraction, and Sweden offers not only the chance to ski, mush, and shoe through it, but also the opportunity to sleep in it. The concept of the "ice hotel" was started here and offers the excellent prospect of inner-igloo slumber for all who didn’t have to chance to grow up as an Alaskan Inuit. But while Inuits certainly won’t be found on this side of the planet, another ancient population can be. The Swedish Sami, one of the oldest European peoples whose history dates back over 10,000 years, are a warm and friendly indigenous group in the midst of this frozen land, inviting travelers to watch their reindeer races, take a peek at some of their renowned artwork, and try a bite of their most traditional dish: reindeer (sorry again, Rudolph). The reindeer won’t be the only taste of Christmas you’ll find this far north, either, as Gothenburg hosts the biggest (or at least the brightest) Christmas party every year, with over five million Christmas lights. As Swedish tradition dictates, be sure to try your luck at picking up a moose-crossing sign as souvenir for your friends before heading home. While the practice is not quite legal (and Let’s Go therefore does not condone it), it makes for a far better Swedish keepsake than Stockholm syndrome.
