NAHARIYA

Overview

“The Place for Fun Lovers” reads the gaudy turquoise and yellow sign that greets you as you drive in. But don’t get too excited, Romeo—we have a sneaking suspicion that someone just forgot to put the hyphen in there. Although it’s one of Israel’s most famous seaside resorts, Nahariya is anything but saucy, especially after Lebanese rockets managed to pretty much take it off the map. It’s generally safe today—albeit a little run-down—and it’s now a place for families through and through (with the prices to match). The sands of Galel Galil Beach are packed with screaming kids and their somewhat jaded parents, and, come evening, the crowds head en masse to the promenade, where beachfront bars serve huge ice cream sundaes for the kids and cheeky nightcaps for the adults. The bottom line is that Nahariya wears its resort-town reputation with pride and has become a little garish and drab because of it. If you want secluded beaches, funky eateries, and the ever-present chance of adventure, head elsewhere. But if you can fork over the cash for a room at the Carlton and are looking for the basic seaside sojourn, Nahariya just might be your place.
