Five Ways to Survive the Boston MBTA Green Line

Public transportation truly is great. The T is easy and cheap, plus it’s good for the environment and all that nonsense. I encourage you to swipe that Charlie Card to your heart’s desire.

Except avoid the Green Line like the plague. This is for your own good. But on the sad occasion that it cannot be helped, here are some ways to reach your final destination without pulling out all your hair.

1. Pay attention to where your train is going. Seems simple, but for some it is the most arduous task ever assigned. There are four (I repeat, FOUR) different outbound trains and they go to very different places. Trust me, it is not fun when you are going to visit a friend at Boston College and you suddenly find yourself at Heath Street.

2. If you are getting off at a street level stop, stay to the front of the car and do not give up your spot. Usually the doors only open in the front and, because people suck, the crowds will not part like the Red Sea so you can make your way to the front and get off. Don’t be afraid to throw some bows. It’s survival of the fittest.

3. Always remember that the B train is the most crowded and the most infrequent. You would hope that someone would have now figured out that that makes zero sense, but unfortunately that epiphany has not struck MBTA. Take any other train when possible.

4. Copley does not have a cross over. That means that if you entered under a sign that says “To Outbound Trains,” it truly means only to outbound trains. If you made a tiny mistake and entered on the wrong side, you will have to exit, cross the street, and pay again. Yup— pay again. Bummer.
