Whoever named things in New Zealand either had a morose temperament or a curious sense of humor. As we drove around the South Island, we were constantly caught off guard by the oddly pessimistic names for the natural phenomena. There is, of course, the well-known Doubtful Sound, but it doesn't end there: Dismal Creek, Poverty Bay, Mount Misery, and our favorite, Mount Awful.

Andrew and David both graduated from Harvard College in June, and are (hopefully) beating the recession by traveling for their first year in the "real" world. Using around-the-world plane tickets, they will touch 5 continents in 8 months and will use Let's Go guides throughout. In the summer of 2009, both were Research Managers for Let's Go--Andrew for Let's Go: Greece and David for Let's Go: Israel and Let's Go: Berlin, Prague, and Budapest. Once their trek ends, they will figure out the rest of their lives in New York City. For now, though, let's go.
For 52 years, we have published the world’s favorite budget travel guides, written entirely by students and updated every year. With pen and notebook in hand and a few changes of underwear stuffed in our backpacks, we spend months roaming the globe in search of travel bargains.
