~Jerry Seinfeld

Despite constant competition with corporate megastores, the advent of online shopping, and the failure of Meg Ryan’s Shop Around the Corner in You’ve Got Mail, New York’s independent bookstores are thriving. Whether you’ve visited the same tiny shop for years or you didn’t realize books could be bought from anywhere but amazon.com, there’s never been a better time to discover something new in the city that has it all. The bookstores listed below—just a small sampling—range from all-encompassing to absurdly specialized, but they’re all perfect for browsing or wiling away the afternoon.
