When most people think of Paris, they think of the typical tourist hot spots, Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, Sacre Coeur, Jim Morrison’s grave, etc. You might even think of it as the fashion capital of the world and that even if you wanted to, there is no way you’d be able to afford to A) go to a runway show, or B) wear any of the clothes that are being modeled. Well, wait no more! There is a fashion show about every week that happens on the roof of one of the most famous department stores in Paris; Galeries Lafayette!
This free service of visual posh French accoutrement does come at a small cost, however. You need to reserve tickets on their website: http://haussmann.galerieslafayette.com/en/fashionshow/
The last time I was in Paris, I tried to go to the fashion show, but at the time it was on the 7th floor of the department store. Why was that a problem? Well, you see, I use a wheelchair, and while normally if I can’t get into a building by myself or with the help of friends I will enlist a handsome young man to help lift me to my heart’s desires. Unfortunately the elevator of Lafayette did not go to the 7th floor and when I asked a customer representative whose offices were in the basement of the store, they said that I would need to contact the fire department to strap me in a special chair, carry me up the narrow escalators, and then repeated to get back down. Unfortunately I decided to save this display of heroic french firefighters for my dreams and instead bought a wallet.
According to their website, the fashion show is NOW on the 4th floor! So that shouldn’t be a problem for me in the future (unless all 5 elevators short out). So I will attempt to see gaudy displays of clothing again in the near future.
This story pretty much sums of my travel philosophy which is:
Not everything goes as planned, and when they don’t, it’s best to just roll with the punches. Or at least the department store sales.
Au revoir, Galerie Lafayette!
