Soaring 60m high at the coastal tip of Las Ramblas stands the Columbus Monument, constructed in the 1880s for the city’s World’s Fair in commemoration of Columbus’s return from America (or “India,” rather).
The statue is intended to point west to the Americas, but it actually points east toward Christopher Columbus’ hometown of Genoa. The reliefs around the base depict Columbus’ journey. Pro-tip: take the elevator up to the Mirador de Colom to escape the noisy traffic and experience the breathtaking panoramic views of the city and port.
Portal de la Pau; open daily 8:30am-8:30pm
